How it all began

At the time when there were no smartphones or Internet, I was fascinated when I read that HAM (amateur) radio operators were capable of communicating with people around the world. I always wanted to be a HAM radio operator but it did not materialise.

In the fall of 2018, my wife signed our family of 3 for a HAM radio operator basic course with the Delta Amateur Radio Society (DARS). Without any background knowledge of electricals or electronics, the course was tough for us. However, the instructors were knowledgeable and passionate and after the 10-week course all 3 of us graduated as a family of certified HAM operators (Basic with Honours). What pleased me most was not the results but the process. We worked as a family helping each other understand the topics, formulate study and exam strategies and encouraged each other. This process really touched my heart.

We are now authorized by Industry Canada to operate radio communication equipment within the amateur radio frequencies.

Now instead of using ordinary walkie talkies for family activities, this Ham-ily now use our HAM handhelds in Simplex to communicate among us.

While still in the study mode, I went on to successfully conquer the advanced HAM radio operator qualification in the spring of 2019. This was done through the help of quality instruction from the Delta Amateur Radio Society.

I am now permitted to build and operate my own transmitting equipment, sponsor a club station, run on higher power and operate my own repeater station.

Being an introvert, I listen much more than I talk. If you find me keeping quiet, assured that I enjoy being a more passive participant to an interesting conversation rather than an active one.

After getting into this hobby, I realise that amateur radio operators are not amateurs at all; they are helpful, passionate and extremely knowledgeable.

Cheers to a hobby that will last a life time!
